We’re excited to announce the January 2020 Artist of the Month: Alkali Layke!

Alkali Layke is a long-time cosplayer, gamer, and cosplay convention panelist who is extremely involved with building a positive and productive community of costume makers and prop builders.

Recently, Alkali was a finalist in the TwitchCon 2019 Cosplay Contest with her Dr. Boom Cosplay (Warcraft/Hearthstone) in the Larger than Life category. Her cosplay included extremely large panels of EVA foam, electronics, custom lighting, body painting, and full-face prosthetics. She did a phenomenal job and was a tremendous asset to the competition.

She started making her own costumes and props back in 2013, and regularly attends cons in the western areas of the US. You may have seen her at BlizzCon, TwitchCon, Planet Comic Con, Salt Lake Comic Con, and Emerald City Comic Con; among others. As most of us, Alkali has been a fan of comic, gaming, and film culture, but has been recognized and highlighted as a featured guest at many conventions around the country.

Her favorite materials to work with are EVA foam, including foam sheets, and especially specialty foams like EVA foam dowels, cones, and C-4 foam clay. She’s also very skilled with sewing, body paints, and many other mixed media projects to help create some truly impressive cosplays. Alkali’s personal favorite projects have been Garrosh Hellscream, Dr Boom, and her Gladiator Wonder Woman – although she has a long list of other characters!

Alkali Layke has been inspired by some of the more popular female prop builders such as Jackie Craft and KamuiCosplay; but also learns from and has a huge appreciation for some of her peers at local cons and competitions. Her dream cosplay is to do a Paladin Draenei with a giant crystal hammer and plans to start on that sometime in 2020!

Her background in creativity started over 16 years ago as a hair and makeup artist, and became licensed along the way, which led specifically to special effects makeup and prosthetics. She made it to the final casting round of the TV show ‘Face-Off’, and eventually brought her to start showcasing her work at local cons as a makeup artist for several celebrity guests, and of course inspiring her to do her own makeup and cosplays.

What’s so impressive about Alkali, is her commitment and compassion to her family, friends, and fans. She’s not only been able to enjoy being part of the cosplay and con community for many years, but has been able to inspire thousands of people to create their own projects, and pursue their own goals. It’s one thing to be a talented artist; but being able to encourage and empower people all over the world to create and learn is a whole new level of commitment and influence.

You can find Alkali Layke streaming on Twitch.tv and YouTube regularly. She’s also on a gaming team “Fade2Karma” which is a positive community of Hearthstone players:

From all of us at the TNT Cosplay Supply family (and beyond), we offer our sincere appreciation and support for all you’ve done!
